Sustain Britain Update: 4th October 2024

4th October 2024

Thanks again to everybody who attended the conference and contributed to the Sustain Britain concept. We are very keen that the conference is not just a well-intentioned talking shop but actually contributes to the development of future Sustain Britain ideas.

Feedback

If you have any feedback that you would like to share with us, please take the opportunity to use this link to our survey. The post-conference survey remains open until midnight on 11 October.

For now, we continue to collate the notes and feedback from the conference. Over the coming weeks we will be pulling these together to create the Sustain Britain Manifesto / blueprint document (we probably need to think of a better name for this; we don’t want to be viewed as a traditional political movement).

Our intention is that this can be used to share with communities across the country, so that they too can create their own Sustain Circles, becoming more self-sufficient, and keeping more wealth within their local communities.

Other updates:

We have been talking to Jarvis Smith, who kindly spoke at the Sustain Britain conference, and have agreed to a two-page article on the conference and Sustain Britain in the COP 29 edition of My Green Pod magazine. This will appear both online and in print. We will have copies available to share at the Sustain farm shop.

For those of you that are unfamiliar with the publication, My Green Pod has a large international readership and is one of the most popular Sustainability publications in the UK.

Local news

There continues to be a lot of local support for Sustain Britain and our work at Sustain Wiltshire; I have been stopped in the street twice this week by people wanting to discuss the idea and offering help.

Influencing government

One of the issues that I am giving some thought to, following on from Roz Savage’s comments at the conference, is how central government can assist with the Sustain Britain movement. We will share more on this as we develop our thoughts.

Latest takeaways from the conference

We will hold another event in the near future to continue developing and spreading the word of our sustainable vision.

We thought the idea of energy independent housing development / autonomous houses was a reminder that this can be done, and this will feed into our thinking around the Green Halo development concept.

Until the next blog update
