Work towards our goal of using positively pressured inflatable greenhouses to produce affordable fruit and vegetables for our local community moved a significant step forward this week.
One of the key steps on this journey is to find a robust film that has the translucency, UV properties, chemical stability, strength and flexibility to ensure the integrity of the pressurised growing dome/greenhouse structures.
DBS, who are providing the prototype structure, have this week confirmed that they have successfully tested a material that possesses all the required properties, enabling the project to move to the next stage.
This will see the material tested in the Middle East for a month, where it will be exposed to extreme sunlight. If trialled successfully, a full roll of the material will then be manufactured and used to build a 3 x 3 metre dome prototype at the DBS facility in Slovenia, for use in testing of light transmission and strength.
For us, this represents a major step forward in the development these innovative, cutting-edge Sustain Super-Midden structures, taking us closer to the point where a full-size 40m x 20m protype can be constructed at our Brinkworth Road, Crapper and Sons Landfill site on Park Grounds. If all goes well, we could see the first of these prototype structure in place by the spring.
Until next time
